Did you know that cabbage ranks right up there with broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts with a reputation for fighting cancer? Several research studies have found the cabbage contains several cancer fighting properties that help trigger enzyme defenses that inhibit tumor growth.

Uncooked cabbage is high in glutamine, an amino acid that is essential for intestinal health and is believed to help relieve any type of inflammation.

You might be surprised to know that fresh cabbage contains more vitamin C than oranges! Regular consumption of this antioxidant helps detoxify the body by purifying the blood and removing toxins, as well as helping the body develop resistance against infectious agents. Cabbage is also a good source of vitamin K, which is essential for the production of blood clotting proteins and bone metabolism. This cruciferous vegetable contains a lot of fiber and adequate amounts of potassium. Potassium is a vital electrolyte when it comes to regulating blood pressure. Cabbage even boasts quercetin, an antioxidant that is a natural antihistamine, which can benefit allergy sufferers.

Two types of cabbage, Savoy and bok choy, provide beta-carotene- an antioxidant that battles cancer and heart disease. For those who don’t eat dairy-bok choy is a great source of calcium, which may help prevent osteoporosis.

Cabbage is a natural weight loss food. Research has shown that cabbage contains a chemical called tartaric acid, which inhibits the conversion of sugar and other carbohydrates into fat. This food is also low in calories, one cup of cooked cabbage contains only 33 calories. Substituting a meal with cabbage salad once a day is an excellent way to reduce weight.

Finally, raw cabbage is one of the best vegetables you can eat to ease inflammation of the joints, or cure a headache.  There are multiple types of cabbage, including different varieties of red and green cabbage.
