Every Spring I like to offer a cleanse to readers and clients of BE Health & Yoga Center that can help remove acidic build up in the body from winter foods and drinks, as well as heal the gastronomical effects of seasonal travel. My cleanses are not extreme but rather designed to bring balance to body, mind and spirit.
This year’s cleanse will incorporate the supplement -Diatomaceous Earth (food grade). Diatomaceous earth (often referred as DE) is a naturally-formed sedimentary mineral rock. It’s derived from the remains of diatoms, or oceanic unicellular algae. Diatoms are over 30 million years old and are formed from the cementation of microscopic algae-like plant remains into the earth’s surface. These clay-like, chalky remains are usually found in the form of a thick, white, siliceous powder known as diatomaceous earth. What makes DE a unique supplement is that the diatom’s skeleton is made from silica, a mineral that has numerous health benefits to the body.
Natural Source of Silica
What my research found is that Food-grade diatomaceous earth is composed of approximately 85% silica. This important trace mineral is necessary for tendons, cartilage, blood vessels, and bones. This nutrient even contributes to almost every vital organ, including the heart, liver, and lungs. Food was the primary source of naturally occurring silica before modern farming practices depleted the soil. It is suggested that only 1/3 of the silica we need is available in natural, plant-based foods. As we age, silica levels decline and without adequate tissue levels of Silica, we manifest many of the symptoms of aging such as joint disease, weakened digestion, and wrinkled skin, to name a few. It has also been found Calcium and Vitamin D alone, are not sufficient for bone strength; the benefits of silica is what helps with calcium absorption.
Silica may help stimulate cell formation and metabolism, help prevent kidney stones, clear up diarrhea and constipation.
Supports Heart Health-research has shown that food grade diatomaceous earth may offer positive benefits for cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
Silica may stimulate cellular repair & regeneration to optimize metabolic functions & and activate longevity hormones.
Silica may carry anti-inflammatory, anti-aging & antioxidant healing properties for immune system resiliency.
The Silica in Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth also serves as an Internal Cleanser. By gently working as a mild abrasive, diatomaceous earth may help remove intestinal invaders and other harmful organisms from the digestive tract such as toxins, heavy metals, bacteria, viruses, fungi, drug residues, and pesticides.
There are many health claims regarding what diatomaceous earth can do for the body, but the fact is, there are few scientific studies to back it up.
I spoke with colleague Dr. Rebeca Gracia, PharmD and Toxicologist, and she confirmed that there isn’t much in the way of “hard research” on the topic of DE, except for one scientific article; diatomaceous earth lowers blood cholesterol concentrations. Dr. Gracia says “all other benefits are hypothetical, but knows of many many individuals who find relief from various symptoms”. She herself claims to use it on a regular basis for her and her family. Dr. Gracia also confirms “it is a very safe and inexpensive way for some people to enjoy symptom relief!”
Let it be known, that Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth is different from the Diatomaceous Earth used to clean pools and kill insects.
A few of my nutrition clients and I have been using diatomaceous earth and here are some of the benefits we have been receiving:
Solid, consistent Energy throughout the day.
Far fewer cravings.
Better sense of calm and well being.
Improved Focus & Memory.
Improved Skin, Stronger Nails.
